This is a 9 mile hike, but it is mostly downhill,
so it is relatively easy. With a 1/2 hour lunch break the trip
requires about 4 1/2 hours, not including the time required for
the car shuttle.
The trailhead is at a small parking area just before the entrance to the Blue Jay Campground. The campground entrance is marked by a prominent sign on the left. You have gone slightly too far if you pass it. Detailed driving instructions are given in the above link.
The first leg of the trip is on the San Juan Trail,
which meanders through oak trees
as the trail descends steadily toward Lion Canyon. The San
Juan Trail intersects with the Chiquito Trail at 2 miles.
A sign marks the intersection, and go left there. The San Juan Trail (not the
same as the San Juan Loop) continues on to the Ortega Highway.
At 2 3/4 miles the Chiquito Trail reaches the small stream that flows down
Lion Canyon. The path follows the stream for another 1 1/2 miles
to Chiquito Falls, also referred to as the Lion Canyon Falls.
The trees are now much bigger, and species other than oak are present.
The grade is nearly flat in most places.
The first 4 miles constitute a delightful stroll through the woods.
At 4 miles the forest abruptly gives way to chaparral. The Chiquito Falls are immediately to the right, and are reached by a short spur off the main trail. They are a good place for a lunch break.
The remainder of the hike is described in the Lion Canyon section.
